The tester checks the permissions available to the supplied database user. It does not grant, revoke or permanently change any MySQL privileges.

Some permission checks may create a temporary table or temporary test record and then remove it immediately. Run the test only against a database where these checks are safe.

Avoid testing with the MySQL root account. Applications should use a dedicated database user with only the permissions they genuinely require.

Common application permissions

Most applications need SELECT, INSERT, UPDATE and DELETE.

Installation and upgrade tools may additionally require CREATE, ALTER, INDEX and DROP.

Read-only dashboards usually need only SELECT access.

Access denied errors

Incorrect password
The supplied password does not match the selected MySQL user.

Incorrect host
MySQL users are identified by both username and permitted connection host.

Missing database grant
The user may exist but have no privileges on the selected database.

Remote access blocked
MySQL or the server firewall may reject remote connections before permission checks begin.

Least privilege

Grant each application only the permissions it needs to perform its normal work.

Avoid using an administrative account for a website, plugin or remote integration.

Restrict the MySQL user to the required database and permitted server address where possible.

Review unused users and grants regularly.

Example grant

A typical application grant might resemble:

Replace the database, username and host with values appropriate to your own server.

Permission tips

Test using the same credentials and server address used by the application.

A user may have different grants when connecting from localhost, a LAN address or a remote server.

Reconnect after changing grants so the application starts a fresh database session.

Back up the database before granting permissions that allow structural changes.
